Pies Poetry And A Pint Of Gin.

GordonsGin

I’ve never made a fancy cake
a malt loaf is really me
I can make a lovely cuppa
so I can always have Assam tea.

I can rustle-up a chicken pie
with the shortest crust you’ll ever find
with a tasty bit of gravy too
but I never make tiramisu,
or even glorious meringues that rise
in heavenly peaks that reach the skies!

I’d rather have a drop of gin
and write a little ditty,
I’m getting on a bit you see
but I really don’t need your pity.
I truly like to dance and sing
with music playing in my ears
a duster in my hand,
like I was seventeen again
as I listen to rock-bands!

I like the music blaring out
put on my heels and gad about,
It gets the work done double quick,
then a drop of Gordon’s, does the trick.

Pies,Poetry and a pint of Gin
my life’s complete, I dream within
of Para-gliding in sunny climes
but to be quite honest I haven’t time.
I’m busy selecting the brightest hues
of brand new hair colours
and when I stand in queues,
I love to listen to the latest chat
of pretty girls who admire my hats!

I love to spray the testers too,
such fun to smell like a famous star
with Chanel and Gucci, I’ll go real far…

Never mind the ‘leccy bill, would
love a new lipstick, better than pills!
Ah! this ones, the one for me
scarlet red, smooth as can be
will make me feel like twenty three,
Pies, Poetry and a Pint of Gin
to dance down street, new life within.

I’ll spend the days reviewing years
I like to write and think a lot
not much one for knitting socks,
nor for mowing or removing weeds,
I think I’ll  move overseas
and sit all day with skirt to knees!                                                                                                                                                                                                                In deck-chair on sand and feet in sea,
with wrinkled face and cigar for me.
I can dance all night in Latin clubs
with swarthy handsome younger coves,
then come home at dawn for a cup of tea,
perhaps I can learn to water ski?

But really all I need is
Pies, Poetry and a Pint of Gin !

“Open Gardens” by Susie Hemingway

Open Gardens June 2009 053

How glorious the gardens
each and and everyone,
how extravagant and bursting forth
with riot of perennial fun,
we wandered down the sunlit lanes
on this our lovely ‘open day’
the splendid evergreens and rose-beds  wide
to narrow scented lavender surprise,
walkways of the greenest hues
from red, to yellows and to blues,
the pinks so soft upon your eyes
geraniums  potted on one side.
Hellebores in groups of six
herbaceous borders in pretty mix,
cabbages, onions and chickens too!
fruits and herbs in stunning views
delphiniums lush in velvet blue
sturdy potatoes in their pots!
leeks , carrots and shallots.
Water features to cool and trickle
fish ponds, rock gardens and plants that tickle!
Many pots and nursery beds
perfumed scented that turn your head.
Arbour’s, enchanting ‘rose cascades’
Ah! what a wondrous pleasant day.

What a wondrous pleasant day…

The Downhill Challenge

Down Hill Race Weekend Sept 14 2008 004 Down Hill Race Weekend Sept 14 2008 009

Yesterday we attended the downhill challenge which is an event for gravity racers. Just a stones throw to this beautiful little wolds village  with the very long steep hill running through. Teams take place in various classes covering the downhill course of approximately 800 metres. Such fun with some novelty entries to some very slick ones indeed.

The weather was great and we marched up the hill to watch closely from behind the straw bales these wonderful ‘gravity racers’ come hurtling down the hill to their chosen music.  A fantastic atmosphere ensued, as we clapped and cheered amid such  excitement, as each entry tried to get the best time  or at least improve on their own, before being towed up to the top of the hill to do it all over again.

With the many stalls and the prevailing smell of bacon butties, hamburgers,  and sausage babs  wafting through the late summer air, it was a really lovely way to spend a Sunday with  family and friends.

Susie’s Lentil Soup with Creme Fraiche.

Lentil Soup Aug 2008 002 Lentil Soup Aug 2008 006

As a child our Mother used to make Lentil soup so I suppose my love of this rich delicious pleasure was laid down early on in my memory of  favourite tastes. Then as an adult I made it often as a winter warmer for my family but I have never tasted one so good as the Lentil soup served at the Hilton Hotel in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. I sneaked into the  restaurant kitchen one  evening after having their sensational lentil soup yet again as a starter. Of course the very nice chef was not about to give his secret recipe away but with some gentle persuading I manage to  glean the little tips that make all the difference to achieving  a really great lentil soup. My recipe is now as follows.

3 tablespoons of butter – Salt and black pepper.

1 large onion chopped –    Juice of 1 lemon.

1 stalk of celery chopped – 3 carrots chopped.

3/4 lb lentils rinsed and soaked over night – 2 teaspoons of cumin.

3 pints of good rich meat stock –  1  beef meat bone ( optional).

Small garlic flavoured croutons.

Now either red, yellow, green or brown lentils can be used -see the two photos – I do like to soak mine overnight after rinsing well, these days the quality of lentils is so good this  may not be necessary still I feel it makes a difference. Never soak your lentils in salted water as this makes the skins hard .

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan and cook the onion slowly, until soft  and a golden colour. Add the celery, carrot and saute for a few minutes. Add the lentils and the meat bone ( if using) and the rich meat stock. Bring up to the boil and then turn down to simmer for at least  1 &  1/2 hours, longer if possible, gentle long slow cooking makes this soup . When the lentils are soft and cooked, season the soup with salt and black pepper. Then add your lemon and cumin, we like rather a lot of cumin but I have suggest 2 teaspoons to start,  Remove the meat bone and simmer for a further  5 minutes. Allow to cool a little and then blend in an electric blender – or squash with a potato  masher until a smooth puree.

Return the soup to your pan and bring gently to the boil once more and then down to a simmer – ready for serving. – I serve with a little  Creme Fraiche, and some sprinkled  chopped chives and we like ours rather thick, but you can adjust with a little more stock or further blending should you choose.

Serve with croutons of  bread fried in olive oil,  to which a  clove or two of crushed garlic has been added. This soup is still a very cheap option and is great for  lunch with crispy french bread or makes the perfect starter particularly on a cold winter’s evening.

Remember, cooking with love, it makes a difference you know . I do hope you enjoy it.

Francesco’s Update

Mediterrean Sea

Francesco da Mosto  ends his fabulous series tonight  as he visits to pay his respects at the war cemeteries of Gallipoli.  We also see Turkey’s largest Mosque. Then finally Mosto reaches Istanbul, city founded as the centrepiece of the former Ottoman Empire having completed his voyage. I shall feel a little sad as we leave the beautiful schooner the Black Swan and even sadder to end this wonderful enchanting series. A series that has shown us such special Mediterranean places. Please  ‘Auntie Beeb’ can we have some more, or even some re-runs of his first series.

You can buy a copy in hardback of “Francesco’s Mediterranean Voyage” from www.amazon.co.uk  released 18th August, I managed to get a brand new copy for £10  by scrolling down through new and used. It is beautifully illustrated throughout and a must for fans of Francesco everywhere.

Francesco da Mosto

I am really enjoying Italian architect Francesco’s da Mosto Mediterranean Voyage,  now showing on BBC2 on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8.30. Sailing from Venice to Istanbul in the  fabulously beautiful ” Black Swan” schooner, we follow the historical Venetian trading route, stopping at some of the most beautiful Mediterranean cities on the way. This program is delightful, it brings together the threads of history and culture. Da Mosta  has a very attractive calming voice and is so passionate about the places he visits, that you find yourself caught up in his adventure. We have seen the enchanting  church at Skriljinch  and this week we stopped at the historic Mostar Bridge  in Split and then between the Croatian islands of  Hvar ad Korcula  which were surprisingly beautiful. Then onto the historic city of Dubrovnik.   A stop in Tirana the capital of Albania was interesting if not, a rather strange city. Francesco da Mosto  unadulterated enthusiasm and wanderlust is truly appealing and I cannot wait until next week to continue this journey with this wonderful Venetian.

It’s Not Enough Jacqi Smith!

It’s not enough, it’s just not enough!  how disappointing when the chance was there or so I thought, to bring into play, the very much stronger laws needed to fight against the carrying of  ‘weapon’ knives.  What a “half-baked” piecemeal idea Jacqi Smith talks about!  To even consider taking these hooligans around our hospitals to see the damage done after the wielding  of these knives. Could this ever make these perfectly ignorant people see the pain and damage inflicted, I really don’t think so. Tell me, do they care?  Taking  them to the morgues could possible be better!

The intensification and severity of  the increased knife crime  over this past weekend is showing a trend that will continue  if our government do not get a grip on this appalling situation. It will for sure, escalate even more. This wonderfully  ‘clobbered  together’ plan, our government has managed to come up with. To try to involve the parents of these young people, is too similar to a plan put in place in the states that didn’t  work. So it’s hardly likely that it will succeed here.  This latest government scheme is a waste of money and in no way severe enough. How these criminals must be laughing at the mindless thought that went into this latest ingenious idea! For they know this will not stop them in their pursuit of gang glory.

Build a ‘camp’ in a deserted part of the UK and incarcerate anyone found carrying a knife, no television , no MP3 players,  no computer games and basic food only, take away their freedom, as they are taking from others. Now, that will stop the problem and if they manage to take their precious knives with them! – the ones that make them feel so brave – they can stab each other!  Make them think, before leaving home, that the penalties are so severe and  then, and only then, will they stop carrying knives. Take away their liberty, it is the only way for the rest of  the young people to walk our streets  freely and safely.  Only then Jacqi Smith, will these most appalling crimes stop.

When Will It Stop ? – This Knife Culture.

Perhaps a too emotive subject for me to tackle but how can any of us standby watching this terrible affliction take over  the lives of our young people. How can we stand back and not demand that something be done, to curb this need to kill and maim your fellow man.  How sad to think  in our beloved London and so many of our cities it is no longer safe to walk. How can it be allowed to continue? when on every news program and in every newspaper, we hear or read of yet another young man or woman who has been stabbed to death!  How ever hard the groups of distressed parents and friends – of these daily tragedies – try to  make these stupid and moronic  people see some sense, nothing seems to change. Why should these  criminals be allowed to do what ever they feel like in a country that belongs to us all and to the rest of us who hold it so dear. It seems they will go on slaying each other, while we all standby watching!  Why will our government not  bring in a five year mandatory sentence for anyone found carrying a knife that is not ‘tools of their trade’  How many more young people will die before, it is realised that our laws are inofficious  and therefore without moral duty, these idiots will not stop, until our laws become  punitive. I  would no longer walk alone at night in my own country for fear of  being attacked and there are many who feel the same, how sad is that? How dare they spoil this beautiful country!  The time is now, to make this small minority of ruthless criminals understand that it must stop. This is the time to bring in much stronger laws. Without these laws I believe it will not end.

What the rest of the world must think of  us and the uncivilised way we live I cannot bear to dwell on, it is beyond my imagination. There are times I feel ashamed to be British.

A Pearl Anniversary Poem for Jen and Ian

A Pearl Of An Affair – by Susie Hemingway.

In reality a love affair

this finest one I’ll say it here

for as deep as in the Ocean find

this pearl of  love, the rarest kind.

A strong consistent bonded jewel

a respected and enduring love,

and in standing close we honour them,

their kindness and their joy of life.

It really is a love affair

that’s lasted long all thirty years.

A  recipe for all to see, this  magic

is of Jen and Ee.

A classic timeless romance is here, from

clear blue eyes and gentle brown,

from hearts and friends who stood that day

on sunny steps in Acton town…

For we can see it clearly now

this magic of their precious vows.

this strength, this love, entwines their hearts

embracing  all – to never part.

We  love them so, for without them both

life would be, half the fun, we all agree,

so lets thank the fates that deemed this day

that brought this love, this oysters prized and

special gift, this endless love and gentle bliss.

So raise your glasses one and all!

For this  is love a precious pearl…

Our Village – Lincolnshire Fayre Supper.

Saturday was our ‘Lincolnshire Fayre’ supper held in the village hall.  A really nice evening, enabling us all, to get together for a good chat and sample some wonderful local produce.  Each table of  twelve was so prettily set with flower centre pieces and laden with some really tasty fayre.  We all started with Egg mayonnaise, the delicious taste of free range eggs and local salad made this, a most agreeably piquant start to the main meal. June 7 2008 007

The main course was succulent local cold cuts of Ham, Pork, Beef, local butchers Sausages and tasty Pork-Pies, of course the famous and very unique Pork Chine was also present. Pork Chine is salted neck-hind of pork, taken from between the shoulder blades of the pig, salted for up to ten months and then stuffed with parsley, the other ingredients are normally kept secret, it is served cold. Some may say an acquired  taste  but I like it very much. Huge bowls of fresh salad and new potatoes completed the main course.

June 7 2008 010

We then had a seriously amazing choice of simply wonderful desserts. All home-made, by some of the best cooks in the Village. Ranging from strawberry and chocolate Pavlovas, the wonderful Italian dessert of  Tiramisu, creamy Rice Pudding,  Bannoffi Tart and Assorted Trifle’s etc. Absolutely a wonderful display and a heaven for the sweet tooth brigade, which rather looked like all of us, seeing  the weighty bowls carried back from the dessert table!

June 7 2008 012

Finally to finish, the large trays of Plum Bread, which is another Lincolnshire speciality of dried fruit bread, consisting of raisins sultanas and currents, sometimes soaked in tea and always served with slices of good strong cheese. This particular bread  made at one of our local bakers, has now been chosen by British Airways to serve in  first class on selected flights.

Then Teas and Coffee for those who wish. What a great meal all served so beautifully, on prettily dressed tables with care and many smiling faces. Sharing  all this with good friends, it was a most pleasant evening and enjoyed by all. One little point this evening was all produced  for the grand sum of  £6.50 !

Lemon Curd – A Winning Taste!

April 14 2008 Jenny's Award Winning Lemon Curd - A 1st.*****

How wonderfully good is Lemon Curd, spread thickly on hot buttered toast, absolutely delicious and a wonderful pick-me-up at anytime of the day or even night!  My Sister Jenny, who lives at ‘Orchard End ‘ in the Village, came up with this years winning jar at our Village Flower and Vegetable Show.  Being an excellent cook, Jenny gaining the 1st Prize, was really no surprise to us all.  I will from time to time,  ‘blog’  some more of  her wonderful recipes. So for lovers of this really superb spread, I print the winning recipe below. Do hope you try it.

Lemon Curd – made with love.

Rind of  3 large lemons. Juice of 2 Large Lemons. 8ozs Castor Sugar.   4ozs unsalted butter. 2 large eggs.

Put lemon rind and juice, sugar and butter into a basin over simmering water. Stir until sugar has dissolved, Add the well-beaten eggs and continue to stir until thickened ( about 10 min’s)  until curd coats the back of a wooden spoon. Pour into sterilised jars and seal. Allow to cool and store in fridge, Pretty cotton lids made from scrapes of clean linen and trimmed with pinking shears, completes the picture, …  I did say store -  Still you could always get the toast and butter ready!
